Important changes for DJI drones

It is the responsibility of every UAS operator to check before flying whether the area selected for flight is not located in a geographical zone with any flight restrictions or even a ban. One of the most significant manufacturers, the Chinese DJI, launched its FlySafe application in 2013, through which pilots using DJI products could be informed about potential airspace restrictions and geographical zones. However, the system developed by the manufacturer, “on their own initiative” and before the entry into force of European Union regulations, had to be modified.

Through the cooperation of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and DJI, from 2026 FlySafe will help remote pilots find their way and maintain so-called geo-awareness in the format specified by EU regulations, based on data uploaded by member states.

The novelty is that, for DJI drones, only the information to be included in the application is the information published by the Member States in the file format required by the EU regulation, and previous data files will be removed. It is important that checking information regarding geographical zones is mandatory for all drone types, and the cooperation between EASA and DJI therefore serves as an example for other manufacturers. It is also worth remembering that all airspace restrictions or prohibitions on drones in Member State legislation are considered geographical zones, so, in reality, the range of such zones is very wide. Therefore, in Hungary, the use of the mydronespace application is essential not only for safe but also for lawful drone use.
